Short answer

An ACH deposit is money paid into your bank account through the ACH network. Banks also call it an ACH credit, and wages paid this way are called direct deposit. The payer starts it. The statement line usually shows the payer's name and a short description, such as PAYROLL. If you do not know who sent it, ask your bank.

ACH deposit meaning

An ACH deposit is a payment that someone sends into your bank account through the ACH network. In the ACH rules it is called an ACH credit. Nacha describes it as a “push” of funds: the payer starts the payment and the money moves to you.

It has several names. They all mean the same thing.

NameWho uses it
ACH deposit, ACH credit, ACH dep, ACH crBanks, on statements and in online banking
Direct DepositNacha, employers and government agencies
ACH transferBanks, often for money you move between your own accounts

For a deposit such as direct deposit, the ACH rules do not ask for your permission in writing. The payer needs your name, routing number, account number and account type. See what information is needed for an ACH payment.

Common ACH deposits

Nacha lists these as typical ACH credits.

  • wages and expense claims
  • pensions, annuities, dividends and interest
  • Social Security and other government payments
  • tax refunds and other refunds

A business can also pay a supplier’s invoice by ACH credit. Money you move in from your own account at another bank can also arrive as an ACH deposit.

Why you got an ACH deposit, and who sent it

  1. Read the name on the line. For a personal account, federal law requires the statement to show the amount, the date, the type of transfer and the name of the other party.
  2. Read the description. The payer adds a short description, up to 10 characters. Some words are set by the ACH rules.
  3. Ask your bank. If the name does not help, ask your bank who sent the payment.
DescriptionWhat it tells you
PAYROLLWages, salary or similar pay. Required for these payments since March 20, 2026
ACCTVERIFYA test deposit of less than $1. A company uses it to confirm an account before it sends real payments
REVERSALThe sender is undoing a payment it made by mistake. As a deposit, it gives back money that was taken in error

Other words are in ACH on a bank statement.

A deposit you did not expect. It may be a refund, a test deposit, or a payment sent to you by mistake. A sender can reverse a mistaken payment within 5 banking days. Ask your bank who sent it before you spend it.

When you can use the money

Your bank may show the deposit before you can spend it. Nacha says there can be several reasons. One common reason is that the bank has received notice of the deposit but has not yet received the funds. See what an ACH hold means.

The ACH rules set the latest time.

Kind of ACH depositThe bank must make it available by
Standard ACH credit9:00 a.m. its local time on the settlement date
Same Day ACH credit, first window1:30 p.m. its local time
Same Day ACH credit, second window5:00 p.m. its local time
Same Day ACH credit, third windowThe end of its processing day

ACH payments do not settle on weekends or Federal Reserve holidays. Some banks release payroll early, before settlement. That is the bank’s choice. See early direct deposit.

Does an ACH deposit count as a direct deposit?

On the network both are ACH credits and travel the same way. Since March 20, 2026, a wage payment must carry the description PAYROLL, so a bank can tell pay apart from a transfer you push from another bank.

For a bank’s bonus or fee waiver, the bank decides what counts. It may count only payments from an employer or a government agency. Read the offer’s terms. More detail is in does an ACH transfer count as a direct deposit?

If an ACH deposit is missing

  1. Check the date. A weekend or a holiday can delay a deposit.
  2. Ask your bank whether a deposit is pending.
  3. Contact the payer. Nacha’s advice is to contact the company or government agency that sent the payment, because it is in the best position to locate it.

If the account number was wrong, the payment normally goes back to the payer with a return code, such as R03 or R04, and has to be sent again.

Can an ACH deposit be taken back?

Yes, in set cases.

  • A reversal. The sender made a mistake, such as a duplicate payment or a wrong amount. It has 5 banking days from the settlement date, and it must make a reasonable attempt to tell you. See ACH reversal.
  • A return. The receiving bank could not post the payment, for example because the account is closed.

A sender cannot reverse a payment only because it changed its mind.

Common mistakes

  • Spending a deposit that is still pending. You cannot use the money until it posts.
  • Spending a deposit you cannot explain. A payment sent by mistake can be reversed.
  • Assuming every ACH deposit counts for a direct deposit bonus. The bank’s own terms decide.
  • Giving a payer your debit card number. An ACH deposit needs the account number, not the card number.
  • Calling Nacha about a missing deposit. Nacha cannot see individual payments. The payer and your bank can.
